Can you add a facecam after recording your screen?

Yes. In ScreenDuo, you can play a saved video from Photos or Files while recording your camera over it. The screen take and the new camera take remain separate in the editing project, so you can adjust the camera size and placement before exporting.

This is useful when the taps are already right but the explanation is missing: an app demo, a lesson, a bug report, or a walkthrough you recorded without your camera. You do not need to repeat the screen actions or use a second device for this workflow.

Get ScreenDuo for iPhone, then use the saved recording as the footage for your camera pass.

Watch: add a facecam clip you already recorded

Already have both videos? This silent, 41-second walkthrough shows importing a screen recording and a separate camera clip in Edit, making a circular facecam, checking playback, and saving the combined MP4 to Photos. Follow the on-screen instructions; no sound is needed.

  1. In Edit, choose Import Video or ScreenDuo Project and select your screen recording from Files.
  2. Open Camera, choose Import camera clip, and select the separate facecam video.
  3. Back in Camera, use Size and position to resize and move the overlay. Choose Circle for a round facecam, tap Done, and play the clip to check the result.
  4. Choose Export, then Export MP4. When you see Video ready, open its three-dot menu and choose Save to Photos. Allow the save if prompted and wait for the confirmation.

Use camera and screen clips with matching timing, and check their sound together before exporting. If you still need to record your camera explanation, use the camera-pass workflow below.

Prepare the clip you want to explain

Play your screen recording once before adding the camera. Note the moments where the viewer needs an explanation, especially a button press, a result, or a change that is easy to miss. Keep your explanation short enough to fit those moments.

If you still need the screen take, follow Apple’s screen-recording instructions. The built-in recording is saved in Photos. Some apps restrict recording of their video or audio; adding a camera afterwards cannot restore content that was never captured.

  • Choose a clean recording with readable text and no unnecessary notifications.
  • Decide whether to keep the clip’s existing sound or replace its explanation.
  • Use headphones if you need to hear the video while speaking.
  • Make a short practice pass before narrating a long recording.

Record yourself over the saved video

  1. Choose the saved footage. Open ScreenDuo and select the video from Photos or Files as the footage to record over. For a saved screen-only project in ScreenDuo, its Add Facecam action opens the camera pass.
  2. Frame your camera. Use a stable position with light in front of you. Leave enough room around your face for the crop you want in the finished video.
  3. Choose the sound. Decide whether to keep the original recording’s audio, then check that your new explanation is clear. The next section explains the common audio trap.
  4. Start the facecam recording. The existing video plays while the camera records you. Explain the action as it happens. Stop when you have the explanation you need.
  5. Review the project in Edit. Check the screen and camera together before deciding on the final crop and canvas.

Recording the facecam over saved footage keeps ScreenDuo open during the camera pass. It avoids depending on another app continuing to use the camera in the background. If you want to capture a live screen and presenter together instead, use the separate-device recording workflow.

Avoid an echo or two competing voices

The two most common problems are speaker sound leaking into the microphone and an old voiceover playing under the new one. Wear headphones when monitoring the original clip. Listen to a short test rather than judging the sound from the preview alone.

In the Add Facecam workflow, Keep original audio in project controls whether the source clip’s audio is retained. Keep it when the app sounds are part of the demonstration. Turn it off when you want to replace the source soundtrack.

If your original clip already mixes narration and app audio into one soundtrack, they cannot automatically be separated just by importing it. Muting that soundtrack removes both. A clean screen take without spoken narration gives you more control over a new explanation.

For planning the words and pacing, see screen recording with voiceover.

Adjust the layout, then export the finished cut

In Edit, position the camera where it does not cover the important controls or text. Use a small overlay when the screen needs most of the space, or a side-by-side layout when seeing the presenter matters equally.

Choose the canvas for the destination. A 9:16 canvas suits a vertical demo; 16:9 gives a wider walkthrough more room. Check that the smallest text is still readable at the size people will watch. Trim spare time at the beginning and end, then export an MP4 to share or save to Photos.

Keep the editable project if you may want a different layout later. The exported MP4 combines the visible layers into a finished video. That MP4 does not preserve a separately movable facecam layer.

Common questions

Do I need two iPhones?

No. Adding a camera pass to footage you already recorded works on one device. Capturing a live screen on one device while a separate device records the presenter is a different setup.

Can I remove the facecam from an old video?

Only when you still have the separate source or editable project. A facecam already burned into the pixels of a finished video cannot be recovered as a clean independent layer.

Will adding a facecam overwrite my original screen recording?

ScreenDuo keeps the source videos and exports a separate finished MP4. Keep the originals and editable project when you want to make another version.

Give your screen recording a presenter.

Bring in the video you already have, record your camera over it, and arrange the screen and facecam before you export.
